How to Choose a Solar Inverter in Pakistan

Hybrid vs on-grid, how to size by load and surge, and the compatibility checks to make before you buy.

Last reviewed: October 2026

The inverter decides what your solar system can run, how it behaves during load-shedding and which batteries and panels it can work with. Choosing it well is the most important decision in a solar setup.

1. Decide the inverter type

  • Hybrid inverter: connects panels, batteries and the grid. It keeps essential appliances running when the grid goes off and uses solar to charge the batteries. This is the usual choice for homes that face frequent outages.
  • On-grid (grid-tie) inverter: sends solar power into the grid and has no battery backup. It normally switches off when the grid is down, for safety. It suits shops and offices that mainly run in daytime hours.
  • Off-grid / backup inverter: runs from batteries and solar and may use the grid only as a charger. It is common where the grid is weak or absent.

If you plan to export power under net metering, check the current rules and requirements with your distribution company (LESCO in Lahore) and NEPRA, because the policy and approved equipment lists have changed in recent years.

2. Size it by load

List the appliances you want to run at the same time and add their running watts. Our load calculator gives a starting estimate. Then:

  • Add roughly 25% headroom so the inverter is not running at its limit all day.
  • Check the surge (peak) rating. Air conditioners, water pumps and other motors can draw several times their running power for a moment at start-up.
  • Choose the next standard size up (for example 3, 5, 6, 8 or 10 kW) rather than the one just below.

3. Check battery voltage and compatibility

Inverters are built for a specific battery voltage (commonly 24 V or 48 V systems). Lithium batteries must match that voltage and, for many hybrid inverters, communicate with the inverter through a supported protocol. Ask us to confirm the exact battery models approved for the inverter you are considering. See the lithium battery buying guide.

4. Check the panel input (MPPT)

Each inverter has a maximum solar input power, a maximum input voltage and an MPPT voltage range. Your panel strings must stay inside those limits in both hot and cold conditions. Our panel selection guide explains how panel specifications affect this.

5. Other points worth checking

  • Output waveform: pure sine wave output is best for sensitive electronics and motors.
  • Single-phase or three-phase: match your electrical connection.
  • Warranty and local support: ask about the warranty terms and who handles service before you order.
  • Monitoring: many inverters offer Wi-Fi or app monitoring; confirm what is included.
